Input Database |

|
The Input Database houses the raw data that are the basis for all calculations made within the HMD. Information for each population is stored in a series of ASCII files. Every country/area in the collection has at least three input data files, containing information on births, deaths, and population size. In addition, there are three input text files for each population, containing "Background and Documentation" about the data, specific notes, and a complete list of data sources. Every number in the data files is linked to a source though a system of reference codes. Specific notes are linked to individual data points in a similar fashion. For countries that have experienced border changes during the period covered by the HMD, the Input Database also includes a file of territorial adjustment factors. An important goal
of the HMD is to provide users with open access to all materials contained
within the Input Database. However, we must limit access in a small
number of cases because of restrictions imposed by the organizations
or individuals who have contributed the data. The information in the
Input Database is manipulated according to procedures that are fully
specified within the methods
protocol to create the data files found on individual country pages.
Detailed information about data types and file formatting is available
in a document called Structure
of the Input Database. Raw data files for individual populations are
accessible through the links listed below. At present, data for the following populations are available through the database:
